ENAVE brings the vessels of Ulysses into compliance
International cinema is once again bringing the Italian coastline to life, and with the theatrical release of Christopher Nolan’s latest blockbuster, The Odyssey, Sicily becomes the natural setting for Homer’s epic. The Sicilian landscape serves as the backdrop for the film’s most iconic scenes: the Aeolian Islands host the dramatic sequence of men fleeing the whirlpool of Charybdis, while the island of Favignana, in the Egadi archipelago, lends its evocative caves for Telemachus’s entrance into the temple and the majesty of the Castle of Santa Caterina to evoke the legendary Ithaca.
A production of this scale, however, relies on more than just grand sets and epic narratives: behind the magic of Hollywood lies a complex organizational machine, where every detail of the set must comply with maritime safety standards.
Safety behind the magic of cinema: The role of ENAVE
To bring the epic tale of Odysseus to life, the production team used a fleet of set pieces designed to sail under challenging filming conditions, carrying extras, rowers, and technical crews on board.
It is within this context that ENAVE’s work took place. Through the EQA—ENAVE Quality Assessment—our inspectors conducted a thorough series of inspections and rigorous tests on all the vessels destined for the set.
The fleet used for filming included several vessels of varying sizes, ranging from 11 to 18 meters in length. For each vessel, ENAVE conducted specific lateral loading tests with uniform weight distribution, simulating and verifying the hull’s stability during navigation and filming maneuvers.
From the most agile 11- and 12-meter vessels—suitable for small crews and tight maneuvers along the coast—to large vessels over 17 meters capable of safely accommodating up to 32 people, ENAVE has issued certification for the transport of people for film production purposes. This verification process ensured the vessels’ buoyancy, allowing the film crew to shoot even the most dynamic scenes with complete peace of mind.
